Blackwell/Shimamoto Residence
Stockton, California
Designed for owners who were intrigued by the geometry, flexibility of space, and use of heavy timber prevalent in traditional Japanese architecture, the Blackwell/Shimamoto residence features a geometric grid layout with exposed construction. The home’s focal core includes a sculptural steel staircase, embraced by exposed concrete columns, open to a central skylight showering the interior with natural light.
Intersecting structural members provide support and alignment for the removable “shoji” screen room dividers, which afford the owners privacy and intimacy of space, yet can be removed to accommodate large numbers of guests. Loft bedroom areas also include “shoji” screen dividers separating them from the central atrium space.
The Blackwell/Shimamoto residence earned an Award for Excellence in Design from the American Institute of Architects.
